Narrative Biography

About Me
I was born in Indianapolis and earned my bachelor’s degree at Indiana State University. After graduation, I studied medicine at the University of Indiana School of Medicine. While in medical school, I earned a U.S. Navy scholarship. I completed an internship at the Naval Regional Medical Center in Long Beach, California, then attended Naval Aerospace Medicine Institute in Pensacola, Florida, and was designated a flight surgeon.

As a flight surgeon I was able to fly jets, study undersea medicine, and jump with the Navy Leap Frogs parachute team. During my five years as a family practice flight surgeon, I was lucky enough to become part of a national- and world-championship, eight-way parachute team. Before pursuing my residency in orthopaedics, I served as the senior medical officer on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Midway.

I started orthopaedic surgery residency at the Naval Medical Center San Diego, and after two years I transferred to Naval Hospital Oakland, where I was chief resident. After retiring from Navy service in 2004, I joined The Permanente Medical Group in Northern California, where I served as assistant chief of orthopaedics for more than eight years and received an award for total joint excellence. I’ve been board certified in orthopaedic surgery for over 40 years.

About My Practice
I was very active in sports while growing up, and as a result I had several bone, joint, and tendon injuries that were treated by orthopaedic surgeons. Many in my family were bridge builders and brick masons, so the thought of rebuilding broken people was fascinating to me. It’s most rewarding to witness how one’s quality of life can be enhanced after treatment of an injury or repair of conditions caused by the wear and tear of life.

My professional interests include trauma care, total joint replacement, arthroscopic surgery, minimally invasive surgery, and prehabilitation (strength training and fitness improvement before surgery—to improve a patient’s chances of a safer and more expeditious recovery after surgery). I’ve done many professional talks on surgical safety and early recovery after surgery.

To stay current in medicine, I attend professional conferences and access online educational resources such as the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons website, VuMedi, and Orthobullets.

I chose to practice medicine on Maui because of my love for this beautiful place. While in the Navy I spent more than six years in the islands. I joined Pacific Permanente Group to become a member of a high-quality medical organization and meet the challenge of bringing state-of-the-art orthopaedic care to Maui using best-practice orthopaedics and shared decision-making with people I treat and counsel.

My philosophy is simple—exercise is medicine, chronic use of narcotic pain medication can be harmful to life, and obesity must be controlled. I love face-to-face, open discussions with my patients and listening to their stories and concerns. I especially look forward to seeing the satisfaction they feel when returning to their regular activities after treatment.

How I Thrive
To stay in shape, I lift weights, ride my bike, scuba dive, and go bowling with my wife every week. I relax and unwind by watching movies, gazing at beautiful Hawaiian sunsets, walking on the beach, and listening to music. Most of all I just enjoy being alive.
