Narrative Biography

About Me
I was born and raised in Dayton, Ohio but my family is Pennsylvania Dutch with roots in a small town called Robesonia, Pennsylvania. I attended Youngstown State University for my bachelor’s degree. I received my medical training at Northeast Ohio Medical University, did an internal medicine residency with Summa Health System, and completed fellowships in pulmonary and critical care medicine at the University of South Florida in Tampa.

I’m board certified in pulmonary diseases, sleep medicine, and critical care medicine. I’m happy to have made Maui my home with my wife and our three children.

About My Practice
My high school biology teacher had the greatest influence on my career. I was also fortunate during my residency to have mentors and role models who helped guide me to the specialties that interested me the most.

I stay up-to-date on the latest medical research by reading journals and medical resources such as Chest Board Review, UpToDate, and Chest Journal. I’m also a member of the Society of Critical Care Medicine, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, and the American College of Chest Physicians, which keep me connected to findings in my field and professional interests.

A number of years ago I worked with Kaiser Permanente in a temporary position. When my term was up I decided to stay on the island because I’d developed a love for the people with whom I worked, the patients I saw, and the beauty of the island and culture here. I greatly appreciate the loyalty, dedication, values, organization, and foundation that Kaiser Permanente and Pacific Permanente Group have shown to the people of Maui County.

Empathy and respect guide my communication with patients and their families. I find it rewarding to explain complex issues to patients in ways that make them feel at peace in difficult situations.

How I Thrive
I challenge myself by doing projects in my house, cooking, doing yard work, and keeping up with my children. To relax and unwind, I go swimming, ulua fishing, trolling, bottom fishing, hiking, and snorkeling. I also enjoy other beach activities with my wife, children, and friends.
