Narrative Biography

About Me
Born and raised in Pittsburgh, I kept various jobs to support the educational goals of my large family from the age of 12. After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in biochemistry, I worked in a lab studying enzymes at Temple University.

Later, I received my medical degree from the Autonomous University of Guadalajara in Mexico. I followed that up with an internship at the University of Maryland and residency training at what’s now known as the Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia. I’m board-certified in internal and emergency medicine and a member of the American Medical Association.

Before moving to Hawaii, I worked in Boise, Idaho, for 27 years at the state trauma center. I fell in love with Maui when I visited my daughter at the University of Hawaii Maui College. She encouraged me to apply for a position at Kula Hospital. Since then, I’ve been on a great adventure, serving my upcountry community and learning Hawaiian culture

About My Practice
I’ve always wanted to do my part to improve humankind, and what better way than as an emergency physician? After many years in this role, I still find my work enormously satisfying. I especially enjoy having the time to really listen to each patient’s concerns and anxieties.

My policy of “no shoes, no shirt, no home, no problem” means that I give equal consideration to the body, mind, and soul of all patients, regardless of their backgrounds or means. At Kula Hospital, we base care on the best up-to-date research and shared decision-making among staff, patients, and families.

Medical practice is constantly changing, and I have to be a jack of all trades in the emergency department. Staying current is a daily affair that requires reading journals, listening to podcasts, attending conferences, and consulting colleagues—forever!

I’ve been a traveling speaker for the American College of Emergency Medicine and have published research on pregnancy emergencies and hypertension medication. My other interests include emergency orthopaedics and wound repair

How I Thrive
To maintain my physical fitness, I follow the big five after 50: exercise, don’t gain weight, exercise, make new friends, and exercise! I regularly hit the weight room, swimming pool, and hiking trails and also spend time outdoors gardening, paddling, spearfishing, and whitewater rafting.
