Narrative Biography

About Me
I was born and raised in Panama City, Florida. I earned bachelor’s degrees in chemistry and biology at Florida State University and received my Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Nova Southeastern University in Florida. At Botsford General Hospital I did a rotating internship and orthopaedic surgery residency, followed by a fellowship at Florida Orthopaedic Institute in orthopaedic trauma. I’m board certified in orthopaedic surgery.

I had traveled to Hawaii many times and was always attracted to the people, culture, and climate. Living here permanently has been fulfilling both personally and professionally.

About My Practice
My father was a pharmacist, and my early years by his side influenced my decision to seek a career in medicine. Other childhood experiences sparked my curiosity about how the body works and repairs itself. Also, through the mishap of a close family friend, I was exposed to the world of orthopaedic surgery. Seeing all this, I knew that I wanted to use my interests and skills to make a difference in people’s lives.

I’m particularly interested in musculoskeletal trauma, minimally invasive surgery, sports medicine, fractures, and bone healing. To ensure that I continue to have the latest information on orthopaedic treatments, I read journals and other medical literature. I attend professional conferences and workshops around the country, where I’ve given presentations and instructed other clinicians on different fracture treatments. Also, my membership in professional societies, such as the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics, the American Osteopathic Association, the American Osteopathic Association of North America, and the American Osteopathic/ASIF Alumni Association, gives me access to the most up-to-date thinking in my field.

I chose to practice on Maui to help increase the availability of orthopaedic care in Maui County. Being part of Pacific Permanente Group allows me to concentrate on the delivery of specialized care, knowing that the hospital is being managed professionally and efficiently to best serve our patients.

My philosophy of care is that providers should address the whole person, not just focus on a present injury or illness. It’s also vital to look at how patients interact with the environment and embrace the connection of mind, body, and spirit. Treatment plans can then be tailored to a person’s individual situation and needs.

To connect with my patients, I strive to always listen from the heart and communicate on a personal level. It’s especially gratifying to see my patients return to their previous activities and overall level of functioning following an injury.

How I Thrive
My ongoing efforts to stay healthy include taking morning walks, hiking, enjoying the outdoors, and spending quality time with my ohana. In my leisure time I also enjoy photography, travel, playing guitar and ukulele, and being involved in advocacy in support of the Hawaiian culture.
