Narrative Biography

About Me
I was born into a military family and have lived around the world. When I was 10, my father was transferred to Pearl Harbor. I went to Mililani High School, Macalester College, and the University of Hawaii, John A. Burns School of Medicine. My advanced training consisted of a combined internal and emergency medicine program at the University of Illinois at Chicago, followed by a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.

At Brown I was honored as a teaching fellow of the year and inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. Later at Tulane University, I was named teaching attending of the year and critical care physician of the year.

I’m grateful to my parents and other family members for their encouragement throughout my career.

About My Practice
I’ve always enjoyed coming to the aid of others. As a child I helped my father with his sports-related injuries, and I thought I’d go into orthopaedics. However, as soon as I began studying advanced biology and chemistry in college, I became more interested in the diagnostic puzzles involved in internal and emergency medicine.

Critical care, my favorite specialty, is academically intriguing and involves caring for the whole patient, including the mind and spirit. I also like the challenge of the different types of illnesses we encounter in critical care.

I’ve given presentations on sepsis, advanced airway management, and e-cigarettes. My research has involved causes of fever in the neurocritical care unit, lung cancer, and care of critical care patients’ family members.

Pacific Permanente Group is patient-centered and dedicated to bringing top-notch physicians to the Valley Isle. I’m honored to be a part of such an organization and grateful for the opportunity to serve the people of Maui.

I want my patients and their families to be involved in care decisions and to feel in control in difficult situations. The personal connections I make as I help patients and their families navigate critical illness provide great purpose in my work.

How I Thrive
Being outside in nature is very relaxing for me. I grew up swimming, playing water polo, and surfing, and I still like to be active both in the water and on land. I enjoy hiking, doing yoga on the beach, spending time with family, and reading.
