Narrative Biography

About Me
I grew up on a small island in Washington State before moving to Maui when I was 13 years old. I earned my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Argosy University in Honolulu and completed an APA accredited internship in Tucson, Arizona. My focus was community mental health, substance abuse treatment, and child and adolescent psychology. Later, I did a psychology fellowship at the Child Protection Center of Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children.

I’m grateful to my mother, an artist and champion of human rights. She inspired in me a sense of compassion and taught me to truly listen. She sacrificed for my education and taught me the importance of hard work, focus, and generosity.

About My Practice
I decided to practice psychology because I wanted to be an agent of positive change. It’s also very rewarding to work in a field that’s so multifaceted.

My primary work has been with children and families, and with survivors of abuse and trauma. I worked with teenagers in the juvenile justice system and at a domestic violence shelter, where I saw the critical need for competent, solution-focused treatment. It’s become apparent to me that children with mental health needs are often undiagnosed, and of those who are, few receive treatment – and even fewer receive treatment that’s been shown to be effective.

Once a month I speak at Kids First, a program sponsored by the family court. My role is to educate parents about the effects of divorce on their children.

I stay up-to-date in my field by taking continuing education workshops, attending grand rounds, and going to American Psychological Association conventions.

Working in a hospital setting is inspiring, because it’s a place where minds come together to problem-solve and provide the best care. I appreciate the interdisciplinary treatment teams, the high level of accountability, and the opportunity to be in a professional community at Pacific Permanente Group, where I can continuously learn and improve.

My philosophy of care centers on empowering patients to improve their lives and overcome challenges. The therapeutic relationship is a powerful vehicle for personal change, growth, and understanding, and it’s a privilege to walk with my patients as they emerge from painful life experiences. I believe that therapists should be knowledgeable about research in their field and that researchers should, in turn, understand the needs and practical experiences of therapists.

To connect with my patients, I use humor and compassion. Understanding the larger picture of people’s lives is critical in diagnosing and developing an effective treatment plan. I feel fortunate to have the kindest, caring patients who show tremendous courage and strength.

How I Thrive
To stay fit, I swim, bike, and do stand-up paddleboarding. I play tennis and have represented Hawaii at a couple of national tournaments at the beginner level. Spending time with family and friends and taking occasional trips help me to stay grounded.
