Narrative Biography
About Me
I was born in British Hong Kong, and my family later immigrated to Los Angeles in the 1980s. I earned my bachelor’s degree at Johns Hopkins University and received my medical degree from the University of California, San Diego. I completed my internal medicine internship and neurology residency at Kaiser Permanente’s Los Angeles Medical Center. My board certification is through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
A former colleague introduced me to my first role in neurology on Maui in 2010. I moved away from the island once over the years, but ultimately I returned to this amazing place I call home.
I’m most proud of my younger brother, who sits on the United Nations Security Council in Geneva. Whenever I think about him, I think of the sacrifices my parents made and the struggles our family faced as immigrants, and how far we’ve come since our move to the U.S. I’m reminded to be grateful for the opportunities I had and to treat those less fortunate with generosity and compassion.

About My Practice
My decision to pursue a career in medicine was driven by the desire to help others. I initially considered specializing in pediatrics, but a mentor encouraged me to pursue neurology. After spending some time on the neurology rotation, I agreed this was where I could make my best contribution to medicine.
To keep up with current medical research, I attend conferences, get updates through journal subscriptions and online publications, and exchange ideas with colleagues. I’m also informed of the latest developments by the American Association of Neurology.
On Maui, I feel that I have an opportunity to make real change in the community. Pacific Permanente Group is filled with dedicated physicians and providers who promote wellness and high-quality health care in a spirit of collegiality and mutual respect, and I’m proud to be a part of that.
My philosophy of care is to treat every patient like a family member. “Care” is both a noun and a verb. As physicians our patients give us the privilege to be involved in their health. We provide the health care, and we should also be caring. Every patient has a story we can learn from professionally and personally, so being a listener and being supportive is part of the health care I provide.
How I Thrive
To stay healthy physically, I spend my time outdoors surfing, hiking, and swimming. I go to the gym several times a week. To stay healthy in mind and spirit, I like to get out of my comfort zone and learn new sports and skills, travel to different countries to gain new perspectives, and connect with friends and family.
