Narrative Biography

About Me

I was born at Walter Reed Medical Center, where my father was stationed as a surgeon. We moved to New England when I was one, and I’ve since lived in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. My father imbued in me the qualities of diligence and dedication I’d need to make it through medical school and the many years of postdoctoral clinical training.

After attending Bates College for my undergraduate studies, I went to Tufts University for medical school, internship, and residency. I completed fellowships at the University of Vermont and Massachusetts General Hospital, and I’m certified in internal medicine, vascular medicine, endovascular intervention, cardiovascular disease, and interventional cardiology.

I was honored to join the Vascular Disease Leadership Council by the American College of Cardiology and named Teacher of the Year by the Maine Medical Center Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship Program. I’m also a member of the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association, the Society for Vascular Medicine, and the Massachusetts Medical Society.

My sister, an archaeologist dedicated to cultural preservation, has worked in the Marquesas Islands and at cultural sites across Hawaii. I first visited here in 2015 and was determined to return.

About My Practice

My curiosity about the aging process and the root causes of illness inspired me to pursue medicine. Early in my career, I noticed that many patients with heart disease also had vascular problems. I found it tremendously satisfying to intervene during an acute heart attack to correct a blocked artery. My goal is to improve the health of our Maui community by combining my expertise in cardiology and vascular disease.

My practice focuses on advanced heart and vascular care, including complex coronary and endovascular procedures, as well as treatment for venous disease, abdominal aortic aneurysms, chronic limb-threatening ischemia, and renovascular hypertension – a form of high blood pressure caused by reduced blood flow to the kidneys.

I’ve first-authored articles in peer-reviewed journals, written textbook chapters, hosted webinars, moderated sessions at international meetings, and given numerous lectures as core faculty in cardiology training programs.

How I Thrive

In Maine, I was involved with organizations that work to protect the environment. I exercise, spend time outdoors, and engage in quiet reflection. I enjoy island hopping and anything that can be done on or in the ocean, or on a frozen pond, such as ice hockey, scuba diving, fishing, and boating.
