Narrative Biography
About Me
After completing my undergraduate and medical degrees at the University of California, Irvine, I served as a physician in the military for 23 years, reaching the rank of colonel in my final 3-and-a-half years. I completed my first residency in family medicine at Womack Army Medical Center in North Carolina and later pursued a second residency in occupational and environmental medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. During this time, I also earned a Master of Public Health from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
While stationed in Hawaii, I completed a third residency in adult psychiatry, after which I served as the Medical Command Behavioral Health Consultant for Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. After that, I returned to Hawaii and completed a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at Tripler Army Medical Center.
I was raised by a wonderful mother who instilled in me respect, thoughtfulness, and an appreciation for all cultures. While serving in the military, I was stationed in Hawaii and instantly felt at home. I’ve now lived here for the past 25 years. I married a beautiful woman from Kailua, and we raised our children on both Oahu and Maui. Nine years ago, we decided to move to Maui due to family needs and because of the warm, welcoming community we’ve found here.

About My Practice
As a child, I had rheumatoid arthritis and was hospitalized many times. My compassion for others stems from those years of discomfort. The encouragement and support demonstrated by my pediatric rheumatologist inspired me to seek a profession in which I could help others and be intellectually stimulated.
After working as a family and occupational environmental medicine physician, I realized that complex emotional, social, and spiritual trials were often at the root of the physical symptoms experienced by my patients. This led me to and kept me in the field of psychiatry.
I’ve presented at numerous conferences on topics of family medicine, psychiatry, and occupational medicine. I continue to teach nursing personnel and give presentations to colleagues in primary care and specialty care.
To stay current in my specialty and in medicine, I read medical journals and attend conferences with my peers and medical colleagues. These colleagues are part of the reason I decided to move to Maui to work in adult and child psychiatry. I’m excited to be part of Pacific Permanente Group (PPG), an organization that bases its medical decisions on established evidence and leverages the latest technology. PPG is patient-focused and believes that teamwork is essential to providing the best care.
My philosophy of care is to be understanding and attentive. I hope to be seen as approachable, kind, and trustworthy. Patients and their families deserve to be treated with dignity and sensitivity and to have their individuality respected. When working with patients, I always try to think of how I’d want my family members to be treated.
How I Thrive
Daily exercise is my go-to for staying in shape—whether it’s lifting weights, swimming, or getting my heart racing with Beat Saber and boxing on my VR headset. When I’m not moving, I love reading, memorizing quotes, and squeezing in as much playtime with my kids as possible. I recharge by spending quality time with my wife, kids, and friends, serving at church and in the community, going out for dinner, belting out karaoke tunes, catching live theater, and, of course, enjoying the great outdoors here in Maui. It’s all about trying to have balance and fun along the way!
