Working and Living on Maui

The phrase Maui nō ka ‘oi, Hawaiian for “Maui is the best,” goes back to the 1800s. From gazing at the sunrise atop Haleakala to traversing the beautiful hiking trails of Hana … from gourmet backyard barbeques in Wailea to paddleboarding across the Maliko Run, Maui offers something for everyone. If you appreciate nature, endless warm weather, an active outdoor lifestyle, and the spirit of ohana (family) in your community, Maui is where you want to be.

FAQs

Where could I live on island?

Central Maui is where much of Maui’s population and commerce is, along with its main airport (Kahului Airport). It’s also where PPG headquarters is located and the home of Maui Memorial Medical Center and Outpatient Clinic. Main towns: Kahaului, Ma’alaea, Wailuku.

South Maui is on the sunny, dry side of the island with a mini-hub of restaurants and shopping. The road in South Maui dead-ends at a beautiful beach resort area that eventually gives way to wild, uninhabited coastline. Main towns: Kihei, Makena, Wailea.

West Maui was a famed visitor destination until wildfires destroyed much of old Lahaina town in August 2023. Typically, PPG physicians and providers do not live in West Maui due to the travel distance to PPG practice locations. However, PPG has been actively involved in efforts to support the Lahaina community in healing and recovery. Main towns: Lahaina, Kapalua, Ka’anapali.

Upcountry, on the slopes of Haleakala, is a lush, cooler clime featuring incredible views and picturesque towns. It would be a perfect choice for PPG physicians/providers working at Kula Hospital or Kula Clinic. Main towns: Pa’ia, Pukalani, Kula, Makawao.

East Maui is the ultimate getaway destination, not a commutable distance from anything but empty beaches, gorgeous waterfalls, and lush rainforests. It’s the place where you drive on your days off to experience the Maui of escapist novels and luxury travel magazines. Main town: Hana

Where can I find information on the schools on Maui?

There are a number of exceptional public and private educational institutions on Maui. According to the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools (HAIS), there are 11 private day schools on the island. You can read about them on the HAIS website. To investigate Maui’s public schools, you can visit the state’s Department of Education website here.

How do I bring my pet to Maui?

Hawaii is a rabies-free state. To maintain this status, the state has a strict animal quarantine law. The main animal quarantine hub is on O’ahu, but there is an approved animal hospital on Maui, where your pet might complete quarantine. There are two length-of-stay options to clear your pet—120 days if you arrive having done no prior steps or the “five day or less” option, if you have done the preparation on the mainland to qualify for this. Read more about it on the Animal Industry Division website.

What is there to do on Maui?

For a small island in the middle of the Pacific, Maui is surprisingly varied in its cultural diversons. The Maui Arts & Cultural Center offers a long list of concerts and the celebrated Maui Film Festival each year. The Kapalua Food & Wine festival has been running annually for decades. Maui is also no stranger to musical events with Jazz Maui hosting shows, as well as the yearly Slack Key Guitar Festival and the Ukulele Fest. Visual arts enthusiasts, can spend time combing over the works at the Hui No’eau Visual Arts Center or the Schaefer International Gallery.

If you’d rather be outside, the island offers a staggering array of ways to experience nature: snorkeling off of Molokini, a small, partially submerged volcanic crater off the south coast; biking down the side of Maui’s imposing volcano, Haleakala; surfing in the perfect-for-newbie waves of Launiupoko near Lahaina; paddling through Olowalu Turtle Garden on a kayak; fishing for marlin and mahimahi year round in the waters off the coast, or taking up-close looks at majestic humpback whales during their annual December through April migrational pit stop. Golfers can also make a project of playing each one of Maui’s 14 golf courses.

How far away is Maui from the mainland?

Maui is approximately 2,500 miles from the West Coast of the U.S. Maui’s small, but mighty airport (OGG) offers quite a few direct-to-the-mainland flights on several carriers including: Air Canada, Alaska, American, Delta, Hawaiian, Mokulele Express, Southwest, United, US Airways, Virgin America, and West Jet.

What opportunities are there for my spouse?

The four main sectors for employment on Maui are tourism, medical, government, and agriculture. Within each sector there are a wide array of positions. With the recent embracing of more virtual work-at-home options, Maui also has a growing community of remote workers.

How many hospitals are there on Maui?

What is Kaiser Permanente’s relationship to Maui Health Systems?
